![]() ![]() With his reputation as a top Overwatch player secured, xQc was soon picked up by Denial eSports in October 2016. In August of that year, he lifted an Overwatch trophy for the first time, winning the Overwatch tournament at DreamHack Montreal 2016 alongside his teammates in DatZit. In the summer of 2016, he began his professional gaming career in earnest by joining DatZit Gaming, an esports team based in Montreal. Soon enough, xQc’s Overwatch skills began attracting attention from people in high places. He soon found that he was perfectly attuned to the game, regularly making high-level plays that were far more impressive than anything he had accomplished in League of Legends. In 2016, everything changed when xQc discovered Overwatch. Though his League of Legends skills were not at the professional level, xQc decided to follow in these streamers’ footsteps and become a Twitch personality. Through League, xQc discovered Twitch and was immediately impressed by the entertaining personalities of popular streamers such as Tyler1. While searching for a new outlet for his creative energies, he decided to turn his casual love for gaming into a career, embarking on a quest to become a professional League of Legends player. Making your game different is often a recipe for disaster, since the average FPS player would rather play a CS:GO re-skin than try something new.Over time, xQc’s interest in extreme sports waned, and his friend eventually moved away, leaving him without a cameraman to film any of his tricks. Total Lockdown is unique in a lot of other aspects too (so much so that it won an award for it), which is another cause for concern when it comes to its chances of success. Entire floors gradually close down, killing those who linger there. Instead of a contracting zone on an open island, Total Lockdown players face off inside a claustrophobic super-structure. Many things in this game deviate from established genre conventions, starting with the arena. While new battle royale games tend to each have a distinguishing gimmick, Total Lockdown came out with a whole bucket of them. A complete F2P remodel would work better, since the game already offers microtransactions in addition to the entry cost. ![]() ![]() The recent price drop is a move in the right direction, but it might not be enough. Still, Total Lockdown tried to make it happen, and has been struggling to build a healthy player base as a result. The F2P model is inescapable, and most developers are painfully aware that while gamers love to talk ethical monetization, they’re not usually down to put their money where their mouth is. Unfortunately, all of that launch hype died down quickly, because Total Lockdown features the unusual (for a battle royale) price tag of not-free. This was the direct result of streamers showing it off, in particular Félix “xQc” Lengyel. When Total Lockdown launched last month – at the perfect time to release with that name – it performed really well on Twitch, totally locking down tens of thousands of viewers for a couple of days. This is not a limited time sale, but rather a new official price. It was $24 just a day ago on Steam, and now it’s $8. Without much fanfare, Panzar Studio just slashed the price tag of their vertical battle royale Total Lockdown by two thirds. ![]()
